which mobile browser do you use for testing?
Is it only on iphone? or android? only stock-browser on android or also on mobile opera/firefox and so on?
I would do some more testing to isolate the problem...
does the * appear when you use an iphone-simulator in a browser?
Try it there, and maybe you can find out more using firebug or something else...
